Bio lamp oil is usually made from vegetable oil methyl esters, a process chemical made from  methyl esters, which typically  can consist of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.

In transesterification plants, methanol is added to a canola oil during the process, resulting in a catalytic reaction. The resulting product further contains methanol, glycerol, catalysts, soaps and other components. Washing processes, with the addition of catalysts,  such as sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, remove water-soluble substances before the palm oil methyl ester is dried in vacuum dryers.
