Application
Stearic acid 50, vegetable is produced by saponification of vegetable oils. During the manufacturing process, the stearic acid is processed in appropriate separation processes, such as hydrolysis and subsequent distillation, to produce a usable product. This is the unsaturated C-18 cut, which is subsequently used in many cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications (skin and body care, e.g. shaving foam). Stearic acid is also used as a base for candles, which, unlike the paraffin usually used, burn CO2-neutrally. Stearic acid is authorised in the European Union as a food additive E570 (fatty acids) and can be used in foodstuffs without restriction. In technical chemistry, stearic acid is used as an additive in rubber compounds or other plastics.

Die Bezeichnung Stear ist griechisch und bedeutet Talg bzw. Schmalz. Es deutet an, aus welchem Ursprung Stearinsäure früher und auch heute noch gewonnen wurde und wird. Deutlich effektiver ist allerdings die industielle Gewinnung von Stearinsäure aus Pflanzenölen, da diese bis zu 70% C-18 enthalten können.
Storage
Nur im Originalbehälter an einem kühlen, gut gelüfteten Ort aufbewahren. Behälter verschlossen halten, wenn dieser nicht in Gebrauch ist. Direkte Sonneneinstrahlung vermeiden.
